Overview of the Rules of Zealots Field

Any successful fantasy football league requires a great set of rules – one which hopefully creates a fair and level playing field for every member to compete on.  After all, if an owner feels that the rules don’t at least give him or her an equal opportunity to win, he or she will quickly lose interest.  And perhaps more importantly, the owner who uses these rules to defeat his opponents and win a championship will know that he did it through his own talent and skill, and so rightfully deserves the title of, “the best-of-the-best”.  But even then, these rules should also allow every other owner in the league to feel that “wait ‘til next year” is not just an empty phrase – the rules will instead give him every fair opportunity to fulfill that promise of redemption.

A strong set of rules must be defined well enough to cover almost every contingency, but still provide enough flexibility to allow owners to manage their teams as they see fit.  It should clearly give fair scoring specifications, roster requirements, and provide procedures for every aspect of day-to-day team management.  Finally, it also should try to set guidelines for those extraordinary circumstances that can occur in even the best leagues, so that events that might cause chaos and collapse in other places can be handled quickly and fairly in Zealots Field. Zealots Field seeks to avoid circumstances such as owner removal and collusion, as well as other painful events, fortunately Zealots Field has defined a set of rules to deal with these extreme contingencies. Developed initially by our founder Oscar Knight in 2002/2003, our rules have proven to provide the great framework for our success.

Lastly, a very key feature of our rules is their adaptability. Oscar Knight recognized that time may show us better ways to set scoring, rosters, procedures, or other aspects of the rules.  So an important part of the Zealots Field year is our annual rules meeting. After most leagues have faded away or have begun their long period of inactivity following the NFL season, we instead come together to set the groundwork for next year, and in an effort to make a great thing even better.  Suggested amendments, additions, or revisions to the rules are proposed and reviewed by our Rules Committee, and then brought forth for vote.  But each and every Zealot has an equal voice: Not only are amendments put together by our Rules Committee, but any Zealot may make a suggestion for an amendment, and if he or she can convince enough people of its merit and gather support, than it too goes before a Zealot-wide vote, the same as any committee-sponsored proposal. In the actual voting, each and every Zealot has one equal vote, and they all count and are often much-needed.  Because while our rules allow for adaptation, they are also structured so that only the things that have major agreement are changed – it takes a “super-majority” of 75% approval to pass any amendment.  This encourages stability from year to year, but also enables modifications to occur when they are truly needed and widely supported.
